Flat Roof Insulation

IMG_2065Thermal insulation for flat roofs provide multiple purposes. The insulation provides a surface for the roof cover to be installed on, assists in maintaining interior temperature control, provides support for the roof, and helps in the uplift performance of the roof system.

The main types of thermal insulation used in flat roof systems today are polyisocyanurate (ISO), expanded polystyrene (XPS), extruded polystyrene (EPS), and mineral wool. The final R-value needed for the roof, as well as they type of roof and the type of attachment for the roof membrane, will help determine which type of insulation is appropriate for each roof. The insulation type selected must be compatible with the roof deck as well as the roof cover.

Once the proper insulation type is selected, the amount of insulation needed, number of layers of insulation, and attachment method for the insulation must be determined. The R-value of the roof system will determine how thick the insulation must be and how many layers will be needed. The insulation may be loose laid, mechanically attached or adhered to the decking.

Insulation should always be installed in more than one layer. The joints in each layer should be offset at least 6 inches. Tapered insulation can be used in the roof design as a method of moving water to drainage systems on the roof.
